New Trekking Route opened from Mustang to Tilicho Lake, Expanding Himalayan Adventure

Tilicho Lake in Nepal is a glacial lake situated at an elevation of 4,919 meters is a unique lake. The lake’s water remains enclosed within the lake as it has no natural water source inflows, nor is there a defined outlet for water to flow away. Recently, a new trekking route opened from Mustang to Tilicho which allows visitors to reach the lake and return within 2 days. New Trail Details
Jomsom is the starting point of this trek. It follows the route that passes through Thini in Gharapjhong Rural Municipality. Before the discovery of the new route, the Chame to Khangsaar is the popular route to reach Tilicho which is still being used.

The chairman of Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, Mr. Mohan Singh Lalchan shared that the new trekking route is in operation and being used by internal tourists as of now. He also further mentioned that the new route was constructed with the collaboration of the rural municipality and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). Now, visitors can complete the Tilicho Lake trek within just 2 days.
Funding and Construction
- For the construction of the new route, in the fiscal year 2023/24, the Gharapjhong Rural Municipality contributed NRs. 5 million for the route’s maintenance and upgrading and an additional NRs. 1 million contributions by ACAP.
- The employment coordinator of Gharapjhong, Ms. Sharmila Shris highlighted that the funding collected from the Prime Minister’s Employment Program and the municipality was used in. 4 and 5 no. wards to construct a 22-kilometer trekking route.
Infrastructure Developments
- The employment coordinator Ms. Sharmila Shris mentioned that the trekking route has been built and upgraded from the routes Jhor Khola to Chema Lake.
- Likewise, Senior Ranger Sanjok Thakali stated that through ACAP the 950 meters of the old trekking path at Mesokanto Pass had been repaired, and an additional 600 meters of the new trail had been constructed.
- The chief of ACAP Jomsom, Mr. Pramod Raj Regmi informed that for the convenience of the visitors, the new route features informational signboards. The signboard has detailed information on the high-altitude areas, unique characteristics, locations, and altitudes. Also, for navigation, there are tourist-oriented hoarding boards and sign postings.
What to expect and manage?
Several internal tourists such as locals, employees, and businesspeople from Myagdi and Mustang districts are following the newly opened trekking trail to visit Tilicho via Jomsom. Visitors must cross the Mesokanto at an elevation of 5,099 meters before reaching the Lake. Also, manage food and camping materials on your own as there are no hotel or restaurant facilities along the route.

Tulan Budhamagar from Fulbari, Malika Rural Municipality-4, shares his trekking experience as mesmerizing upon witnessing the serene blue lake surrounded by mountains which made him forget his fatigue. He shares that this trek takes a 2-hour vehicle ride from Jomsom. Then, trek for 6 hours to reach Mesokanto Pass. From the pass, walk for an hour to reach the heavenly Tilicho Lake.
