Putha Hiunchuli Expedition Overview

Putha Hiunchuli (Dhalulagiri VII), located at a great height of 7,246m, is a hidden gem of the far western region of Nepal. From here, the awe-inspiring scenery of mountains like the Annapurna range, Ganesh, and Api is visible. This is a two-part adventure, the first part an adventurous trek and the second – climbing the slope. This expedition exposes you to the beautiful but challenging terrain of this region’s remote location. Hence, the climbers are required to have good physical fitness and thorough preparation to successfully complete this expedition. Our trip starts at Juphal-Dunai after walking for about a week from the German Base Camp at 4,525 meters. The next stop is the Putha basecamp, which offers breathtaking views of endangered flora and fauna on the way. This area is remote and receives fewer tourists, thus perfect for the peace-loving climbers. From the basecamp (4910 m), the journey progresses to Camp I (5300 m), Camp II (5900 m), Camp III (6300 m), and the final stop after this being the summit before returning.

Putha Hiunchuli Expedition Outline Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1400 m)
Arrive in Kathmandu, get welcomed by the representative, and transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Trek Preparation Day
Documentation works (Issue of Permits, Paperworks), (Optional: Sightseeing in UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu).

Day 3: Kathmandu – Nepalgunj (flight) (150 m)
Smooth flight to Nepalgunj and transfer to the hotel.

Day 4: Nepalgunj – Juphal (flight) (2470 m) – Dunai (drive) (2150 m)

Putha Hiunchuli Expedition Essential Information

Accommodation:

Teahouses or Lodges and tented camps are accommodation types during the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition that provide basic facilities (beds, quilts, and pillows) but are comfortable to stay in. Generally, bathrooms are inside the teahouses except in the higher regions. During the peak season, room sharing must be done. Tented Camping for 1 or 2 nights. Internet and phone networks are mostly stable in the lower regions. Pay an additional cost for services (Wi-Fi, laundry, hot water, and showers).

Meals:

3-course full board meals are served during the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition, which are healthy and hygienic. Breakfast and dinner are served from the teahouses, and lunch is served at the stopovers during the peak climbing. There are limited meal options to choose from on the menu. Professional cooks prepared meals during the tented camping. Please inform your food menu preference earlier if there is any.

Drinking water

Drinking water during the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition is easily available. Climbers can buy Mineral Water, tap water, or boiled water at teahouses as their preference. Always carry a water bottle to minimize plastic pollution. Climbers can also use a water purification solution or buy mineral water, which costs USD 1-2 per bottle. Boiled water is served during the tented camping.

The transportation during the peak climbing is as scheduled in the itinerary preferred by the climbers, which is as follows:

  • Private vehicle transfer to/from the airport in Kathmandu
  • Kathmandu – Nepalgunj flight, Nepalgunj – Juphal flight, vehicle from Juphal – Dunai, and while returning, vehicle from Dunai – Juphal, Juphal – Nepalgunj flight, and Nepalgunj – Kathmandu flight.

The ideal seasons for the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition are Spring (Mar-May) and Autumn (Sep-Nov), as the weather and temperature are stable and offer incredible vistas. The winter and rainy seasons are riskier for peak climbing due to the unstable weather and temperature, slippery trails, and limited availability of accommodation and services. There is a high chance of flight cancellation during the monsoon and winter.

Putha Hiunchuli requires these compulsory permits:

  • Expedition Royalty and permit fee of the Nepal Government to climb Putha Hiunchuli.

Difficulty:

Putha Hiunchuli Expedition is a strenuous trek with a maximum elevation of 7,246 m. Peak climbing is a demanding task, but achievable with good preparation. The mountaineer with good physical condition and prior experience can easily ascend the Putha Hiunchuli. The trails are rough and contain steep ascents and descents, challenging for mountaineers. The best part of this peak climbing is that it is not very technical. Some sections require the use of equipment and gear.

Fitness:

Putha Hiunchuli Climbing demands climbers to have top-notch fitness levels. Climbers should be physically and mentally sound to join this peak climbing. With proper preparation, physical fitness, and acclimatization, it is achievable. Your familiarity with the mountainous terrain and previous trekking experience will be a plus point. Besides, maintaining good health and necessary check-ups before the trek proves to be fruitful. Some physical exercises and mental exercises to carry out before the treks are as follows:

Physical Exercise:

Cardiovascular Exercises, Leg Strength Exercises, Core Strength Exercises, Upper Body Strengthening, Foot and ankle Strengthening, Flexibility and Stability Exercises, and Hiking Specific Training.

Mental Exercise:

Meditation, Breathing Exercises, Stress Management, Solo Reflection, Focus and Concentration Improvement, Setting a goal, Practicing problem-solving skills, Staying Calm and Positive, Enjoying every activity, etc.

Altitude sickness or acute mountain sickness (AMS) is common above an elevation of 2500 m in the mountains. As the altitude rises, oxygen level declines, and air pressure also lowers, which affects the body’s functions, causing altitude sickness. The maximum elevation gain during Putha Hiunchuli Climbing is 7,246 m. Since this is peak climbing, suffering from altitude sickness is high, but with proper precautions and preparation, it is preventable.

Common Symptoms of Altitude Sickness

Headache, nausea, dizziness, uneasiness, appetite loss, and sleep loss, and in extreme cases, some can experience unconsciousness and hallucinations.

  • Make sure that you are insured against cancellations, accidents, health, emergency evacuation and loss, theft of, or damage to, baggage, and personal effects.
  • In emergencies, we will arrange for a helicopter rescue, medical treatment, and aftercare for you. All these costs shall be borne by your travel insurance company.

Putha Hiunchuli Climbing is strenuous. Thus, it requires standard equipment and gear that climbers can hire or bring on their own.

  • Clothes: Windcheater jacket, Thermals, Insulating Down Jacket, Fleece, Long sleeve shirts, Gloves, Towels, Inner garments, Trekking pants, Trousers, Shorts, Socks, Raincoat, Balaclava, Bandana, Gaiters.
  • Shoes: Camp shoes, a Pair of hiking boots, and Rubber sandals.
  • Essential Documents: Passport, Travel Permits, Visa Photocopy, Passport-size photos.
  • Food: Light snacks, Energy bars, and drink mix.
  • Accessories: Sunglasses, Hats/Caps, Sunscreen, Lip Balm, Water bottles, Pocket Knife, Solar chargers, Batteries, Head Lamps, Torch, Umbrella, Sewing kit, Water Purifying solution kits, reusable bags to deposit waste, separate clean/dirty clothes.

Moreover, you should provide your policy details and authorize us to deal directly with your insurance company on your behalf. Please make sure that your insurance will cover helicopter evacuation above 6000 meters.

Putha Hiunchuli Expedition Day by Day Itinerary

Day 01 Arrive in Kathmandu

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m) 30-minute hotel drive.

You are greeted by the beautiful snow-capped peaks when you enter Nepal via flight. Outdoor Himalayan Airport staff will receive you from the Airport and transfer you to the Hotel in Kathmandu. Evening, explore the Thamel area yourself. Overnight stay at the Hotel.

Day 02 Trek Preparation Day

You will meet our staff at your hotel after breakfast to finalize the paperwork, meet your Trekking Guide, be briefed about the trip, and arrange the needed permits for the Trek. After that, you can explore the Kathmandu Valley for sightseeing several UNESCO World Heritage Sites with Private Transport and a Tour Guide at an Extra cost.

Day 03 Kathmandu – Nepalgunj flight

Elevation: Nepalgunj (165 m) 50-minutes flight

Your trekking guide will meet you at your hotel, after which you will drive to the domestic terminal for a flight to Nepalgunj. Normally, it takes approximately 50 minutes to fly to Nepalgunj, after which, you transfer to a hotel and stay overnight there.

Day 04 Nepalgunj – Juphal flight, drive to Dunai

Elevation: Juphal (2470 m), Dunai (2450 m) 35-minutes flight, 1-hour drive

In about 35-minutes, you reach Juphal from Nepalgunj on a very scenic domestic flight. From there, have an adventurous drive for about 1-hour to reach Dunai from Juphal. Stay that night in Dunai.

Day 05 Dunai – Tarakot Trek

Elevation: Tarakot (2537 m) 5-6 hour trek

You will walk the picturesque path from Dunai to Tarakot with your trekking guide. The trek normally take about 5-6 hours, which is along the south bank of the river heading upstream on a good trail. The Tarakot village stands on a hillock to the south of Bheri River where you stay overnight.

Day 06 Tarakot – Musi Khola Trek

Elevation: Musi Khola (2875 m) 6-hour trek

Walk along the steady path along the Bharbung Khola upstream. The next destination is a pasture area near the Musi Khola. The trek takes approximately 6 hours. This is where you stay overnight.

Day 07 Musi Khola – Kagkot Trek

Elevation: Kagkot (3200 m) 5-6 hours trek

Go through the scenic views as you pass through several river spurs on the way to Kagkot. You get to cross the classic Nepali suspension bridge on the journey. After trekking for about 5-6 hours, you reach the camp in Kagkot, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 08 Acclimatization

On this acclimatization day, you spend the day participating in pre-climbing training and getting knowledge on using gear and equipment properly. Practice making knots and learn the right ways to belay and rappel. Learn safe climbing tips, follow the guide’s instructions properly, and if any confusion ask the guide and learn. After the training session ends, check all the equipment and gear and finalize it for peak climbing. Stay overnight in a teahouse.

Day 09 Kagkot – Panjing Trek

Elevation: Panjing(4200 m) 6-8 hours Trek

After leaving Kagkot, the challenging part of the trek starts. You cross the Barbung Khola and climb up through a rough track for about 6-8 hours and finally reach Panjing, where you stay overnight in a camp.

Day 10 Panjing – German Basecamp Trek

Elevation: German Basecamp (4500 m) 4-5 hours Trek

From Panjing, you have a tiring trek due to high-altitude terrain and potential glacial streams. This part of the Putha Hiunchuli hike usually takes about 4-5 hours. The destination is German Base Camp, which is the crucial intermediate acclimatization point; you stay here overnight.

Day 11-13 German Basecamp – Putha Hiunchuli Basecamp Trek

Elevation: Putha Hiunchuli (4910 m)

This is the final trek before climbing the Putha Hiunchuli. The trek to the Putha Hiunchuli Basecamp is a short but physically challenging trek after which you prepare for the climbing the Dhaulagiri VII.

Day 14-29 Putha Hiunchuli Peak Summit, Descend to Basecamp

Elevation: Summit (7246 m)

Follow the instructions given by your guide and climb your way up to the peak of Putha Hiunchuli. Climb slowly as the elevation is rising and the oxygen level is also decreasing. The last section of the peak is very demanding, and by using a fixed rope and a Jumar, climb on the snow dome. Feel victorious on summiting the Dhaulagiri VII Peak. Cherish the incredible views of the Annapurna range, Ganesh, Dhaulagiri main peak, and Api- all above 5,000 meters. Spend only a few minutes capturing pictures and creating memories, and slowly descend to camp for hot drinks and lunch. After that, descend to Putha Hiunchuli Basecamp for an overnight stay.

Day 30 Basecamp – Kagkot Trek

Elevation: Kagkot (3200 m)

Have a relaxing trek as you follow the previous route to return to Kagkot from the basecamp. You are now slowly leaving the high altitude while enjoying the beautiful scenery on the way. Spend the night in Kagkot.

Day 31 Kagkot – Lashicap Trek

Elevation: Lashicap (2775 m) 6-hours Trek

Have a relaxing trek from Kagkot to Lashicap, enjoying the changing views from the alpine region to the remote settlement of the Dolpa region. Overnight stay in Lashicap.

Day 32 Lashicap – Dunai Trek

Elevation: Dunai (2150 m) 6-hour Trek

Have a gradually descending, scenic trek back to Dunai. This is the end of the trek part of the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition. Stay overnight in Dunai.

Day 33 Dunai – Juphal (drive) – Nepalgunj (flight) – Kathmandu (flight)

Elevation: Juphal (2470 m), Nepalgunj (150 m), Kathmandu (1400 m)

Drive back to Juphal from Dunai and have a flight back to Nepalgunj and finally back to Kathmandu on the same day. We will pick you up at the Kathmandu airport and transfer you to the hotel. In the evening, around 6:30 pm, join a live cultural program show dinner at the Typical Nepali Restaurant hosted by Outdoor Himalayan Treks.
