Lower Dolpo Trek Essential Information

Accommodation

  • Mostly tented camping during this trek.
  • Locally owned teahouses or lodges in 2-3 stopovers.
  • Very basic but comfortable teahouses (beds, quilts, and pillows).
  • Bathrooms are mostly outside the teahouses.
  • Electricity available in most villages, powered by solar energy (charging may cost extra).

Lower Dolpo is a strenuous trek and is very demanding. The ideal seasons for this trek are Spring and Autumn as the weather and temperature are stable and offer incredible vistas. Since Dolpo is a rain-shadow area, this region receives minimum rainfall. Thus, the Lower Dolpo trek can be also done during the Monsoon season. In winter, this trek is not possible as heavy snowfall occurs and the region is closed for trekking.

Trek Difficulty

Lower Dolpo is a strenuous trek with a maximum elevation of 5,309 m. It is difficult due to its long duration, high altitude, and challenging terrain. It involves long days of walking, steep ascents and descents, and crossing High Mountain passes. Also, the facilities are limited or very rare. It is beneficial if trekkers know how to use basic gear. This trek is mostly a tented camping trek and limited availability of accommodation and other services can also be challenging for some trekkers.

Fitness Level

Lower Dolpo trek demands trekkers to have top-notch fitness levels as it is very demanding. Trekkers should be physically and mentally sound to join this trek. With proper preparation, good physical fitness, and following the guide’s instructions, Lower Dolpo Trek is achievable. Your familiarity with the mountainous terrain and previous trekking experience will be plus points. Besides, maintaining good health and necessary check-ups before the trek proves to be fruitful. Some physical exercises and mental exercises to carry out before the treks are as follows:

The maximum elevation during the Lower Dolpo trek is 5,309 m (Numa La Pass) and requires crossing another high mountain pass. Hence, there is a high chance of getting altitude sickness and acclimatization rest is essential to prevent it.

Headache, nausea, dizziness, uneasiness, appetite, and sleep loss, and on extreme some can experience unconsciousness and hallucination.

Day 01 Kathmandu arrival

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m) 30-minute hotel drive

Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, an Outdoor Himalayan Treks representative welcomes you and transfers you to the hotel. Introduction with a guide, check the trekking gears. Night in the hotel.

Day 02 Trek Preparation Day

Elevation: Kathmandu (1400 m)

Shortly after breakfast in the morning, you will meet your trekking team, including the trek guide, in our office. He will brief you about the trek. If you wish you will proceed on a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley (Extra cost will be applied). We will cover as much of the UNESCO heritage sites that showcase the rich cultural heritage from medieval Nepal as possible during the sightseeing. We also complete all preparations for the trek during the day.

Day 03 Fly to Nepalgunj

Elevation: Nepalgunj (150 m) 50-minute flight, 30-45 minute hotel drive

Have breakfast and take a domestic flight to Nepalgunj. Get transferred to the hotel with our representative. Later, visit nearby places, the famous Bageshwori temple, and stroll the nearby markets.

Day 04 Fly to Juphal and trek to Dunai

Elevation: Juphal (2470 m), Dunai (2150 m) Approx. 40-min flight, 2-3 hour trek

You will fly to Juphal airport in the morning and have breakfast and then trek to Dunai which takes approx. 2-3 hours depending on your pace. Explore this region for the remaining time and spend the night here.

Day 05 Trek to Tarakot

Elevation: Tarakot (2540 m) Approx. 6-hour Trek

Following the banks of the Thulo Bheri River, walk for some time and cross the river and continue with the trail on the other side. Then trek until you reach the small village of Tarakot where the view of the cultivated fields is appealing. Exploring the village and then stay overnight in there.

Day 06 Trek to Laina Odar

Elevation: Laina Odar (3375 m) Approx. 7-hour Trek

Walk through the beautiful landscape of the Dolpo region with stunning natural beauties. Witness the culture unique to that region while you go towards the beautiful Laina Odar. Once you reach Laina Odar, explore the peaceful area and stay in the tented camp for the night.

Day 07 Trek to Nawarpani

Elevation: Nawarpani (3650 m) Approx. 5-hour Trek

This route goes through a deep gorge and forested lands, providing the rocky views of cliffs and Tarap Chu River. The trail alternating between hill-top and bottom, leads to Nawarpani, which is a small Nomad Camp. There, you’ll find some very basic teahouses where you can rest. There are open spaces for camping where you can spend the night camping.

Day 08 Trek to Dho Tarap

Elevation: Dho Tarap (4100 m) Approx. 6-8 hour Trek

The trek from Nawarpani starts in a narrow gorge along Tarap River. On the way to Dho Tarap, you’ll walk through multiple river crossings and path carved into cliff walls. Witness the vegetation thinning out as you gain altitude. Then you’ll reach Dho Tarap – a remote settlement, culturally significant. Stay in the tented camp that night.

Day 09 Rest Day in Dho Tarap

Elevation: Dho Tarap (4100 m)

Spend this day resting and exploring the local villages, monasteries and nature of that area. Or you could spend time with the locals and immerse in their culture. This day is also an opportunity to acclimatize before climbing higher altitude. Overnight at tented camp in Dho Tarap.

Day 10 Trek to Numa La Base Camp

Elevation: Numa La Base Camp (4440 m) Approx. 4-5 hour Trek

Trek to Numa La Base Camp from Dho Tarap is a steady trek through the remote upper region of Tarap Valley. In the path, you’ll pass through the traditional village of Tokyu with its ancient Buddhist monastery. As the landscape opens into high-altitude meadows and rugged alpine terrain, offering beautiful scenic views. After approx. 4-5 hour trek, you reach Numa La Base Camp, a quiet campsite.

Day 11 Trek to Danigar/Baga La Base Camp through Numa La Pass

Elevation: Numa La Pass (5309 m), Danigar/Baga La Base Camp (4500 m) Approx. 6-7 hour Trek

This is the most challenging part of the Lower Dolpo Trek. Climbing the Numa La Pass – the highest altitude of this trek is as demanding as it is scenic. At the elevation of 5309 m, the Numa La Pass offers the breathtaking view of the remote Dolpo landscape. After that, you descend the rocky trails and alpine valleys, finally reaching the calm meadows of Danigar/Baga La Base Camp.

Day 12 Trek to Temche through Baga La Pass

Elevation: Baga La Pass (5169 m), Temche (3995 m) Approx. 5-6 hour Trek

Baga La Pass is another main mountain pass in this the Lower Dolpo Trek – offering stunning views of snow-covered ridges, glacial valleys, and the rugged wilderness. This is a satisfying part of the trekking route. Here, you can encounter the yak caravans and traditional lifestyle of local people. The downward trail continues toward the sheltered meadows of Temche, where you get to rest in the spectacular views of the Lower Dolpo.

Day 13 Trek to Phoksundo Lake/Rigmo Lake

This day is for relaxing and exploring in the serene beauty of the Phoksundo Lake area. Also visit the monasteries there and soak up their calm and peaceful energy as prayer flags flutter in the wind.

Day 15 Trek to Chhepka

Elevation: Chhepka (2700 m) Approx. 6-8 hour Trek

After spending a peaceful day in the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, have an adventurous downhill journey to Chhepka along the Phoksundo River. This trail winds down through lush pine and fir forests, narrow cliffside sections, and the scenic river gorge of the Phoksundo Khola. The destination, Chhepka village is a small, peaceful settlement surrounded by forest and farmland, a rewarding, warm and quiet place after trekking. It’s a stopping point for trekkers where you’ll find basic accommodation options, and small shops to rest and relax. Enjoy the traditional way of living with the local people in the peaceful atmosphere of this region.

Day 16 Trek to Juphal

Elevation: Juphal (2470 m) Approx. 5-7 hour Trek

Enjoy the last day of trekking through lush forests, peaceful river valleys, and traditional villages on the lower Dolpo trail. You gradually descend through pine woods and settlements like Shyanta, Kageni and Raktand. The trail opens into farmland with walnut and apricot trees before crossing long suspension bridges.

After the peaceful trek, enjoy a relaxing day at a local hotel in Juphal with local people and organic food. Spend the night here.

Day 17 Fly to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu

Elevation: Nepalgunj (150 m), Kathmandu (1400 m) Approx. 35-45 minute Flight (Nepalgunj) and approx. 50 minute-Flight (Kathmandu)

Take a morning flight to Nepalgunj and rest a while before departing to Kathmandu. Transfer to the hotel upon reaching Kathmandu. Rest and relax and in the evening, join us for the cultural farewell dinner.
