On the bright side, Mustang has developed its own distinct socio-political culture so much so that it is practically a kingdom (people still respect Jigme Parbal Bista as a cultural monarch although the government has withdrawn recognition) when Nepal has already been declared a federal democratic republic. The other distinct cultural trait of this region is polyandry marriage system, in which the wife of the eldest male of the family serves as the wife of all the brothers. The mysterious aura of the place also owes a lot to its geography. Its earth has red, yellow and brown colors, dominated by mysterious caves and strange figures eroded into the sandstone that composes its land. This region is in fact a replica of desert like Trans-Himalayan plateau of Tibet, as it remains in the rain shadow area; the mountains here are barren and treeless.

Upper Mustang trek, a journey into this enigmatic enclave of Nepal, gives you an opportunity to see and experience of all these distinct geographical and cultural features. Besides it has other unique highlights as well. The trail moves through the deepest gorge of the earth made by the Kaligandaki River to Lo-Manthang, the cultural capital of Upper Manang. This is where the spectacular palace of Jigme Parbal Bista is located. You will also see numerous monasteries going back to hundreds of years, moving through high passes, peaks, glaciers and alpine valleys. All in all, the entire trek is a superb combination of unique cultural experience and natural landscapes also involving some adventure. Bounded by the Himalayas from the north and south, the panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri make your trip scenically unforgettable one.
