Makalu Expedition

  • Makalu Expedition By Outdoor Himalayan Treks Nepal 1

Mt Makalu, the world’s 5th highest mountain with an altitude of 8481 meters, lies to the south-east of Mt Everest. First successfully ascended in 1955 by three French teams, climbing Mt Makalu is a serious, full-fledged mountaineering expedition in Nepal. Its highly vertical slopes and sharp-edged ridges require the best, the most courageous, the most skilled, and above all, the most prideful and the hungriest adventurer in you. Like the other mountaineering expeditions, Mt Makalu expedition also includes a top-class trek of several days in the mountains of Nepal. During the approach and the return, you will get a chance to observe the Nepalese hill life and culture up-close.

It was discovered by the British Everest Reconnaissance team in 1921. Later on Edmund Hillary and Eric Shipton also photographed the peak. The first attempt to climb was made in 1954, but the success came only in 1955. The standard route to the summit follows the north face, climbing along its northeastern ridge through the Makalu-La. Since then many expeditions have successfully kissed the summit of the peak.
