The third most popular trekking region of Nepal, the Langtang Region lies north of Kathmandu Valley and includes several adventurous routes and spectacular sceneries as well as wildlife conservation areas. Further north, it borders Tibet. If some treks in this region are easily accessible from the outskirts of Kathmandu, others are very remote.
The area was declared the Himalayan National Park of Nepal in 1971 and is inhabited by about 5000 Tamangs and Sherpas who fairly resemble Tibetans in language, costumes and religious practices. With emperate and sub-alpine vegetation, wildlife comprised of migratory birds, deer, monkey, Tahr and Pika, this is indeed a fascinating trekking region, the best time to trek being Spring and Autumn. Choices for luxuries accommodation are limited in this region and most trekkers stay in tents, teahouses and local homes.
Major attractions in the Langtang area besides the Langtang Valley itself are Gosainkund (a magnificent glacial lake, also a sacred Hindu shrine), Helambu, Syabrubesi and several peaks including Langtang, Kimshun, Lirung, Ghengu Liru, Jugal, Dorjee Lakpa and more. |
