  Annapurna Circuit Trek

  Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit stands for a circular loop around the Annapurna Region and the trek along this circuit is very popular among foreign as well as Nepalese trekkers. The circuit can normally be covered on foot in 18 days, or if you wish to shorten it, you can do it in 14 days by flying to and back from Pokhara before and after the trek. Besides, many side-trips can be formed using only a part of the circuit and then heading to different fascinating destinations like Ghorepani, Jomsom, Annapurna Base Camp, etc.

Taking both convenience and budget into consideration, we have prepared this itinerary so that almost anybody with sound health and fitness level can participate in this trek. Our trek begins from Khudi, lying at an altitude of just 850 m, following Marsyangdi River (upstream) till we reach its source near the beautiful valley of Manang, continues through typical Nepalese villages, forests and passes, the highest point being Thorong-La Pass as high as 5,416 m.

Throughout your journey you will be able to enjoy spellbinding views of the Himalayan Range, including three major peaks, Mt. Annapurna, Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Manaslu, all of which measure above 8,000m. Your trekking experience will further be enriched with multicultural experiences as you meet the local villagers who may be economically poor, but are kind at heart and are helping Nepal preserve some of her ancient traditions. The Himalayan wildlife and dense forests of oak, rhodondendron, pine, maple and many other species of plants will help you gain a fair idea about the biodiversity that Nepal treasures.

  Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: At 7:15 am your tour guide will receive you from your hotel and transfer you to the New Bus Station in a car. From there you will ride a bus to Khudi (850 m), the duration being 7-8 hours normally. The route follows Trishuli River and you can enjoy beautiful scenery on your way. After arriving at Khudi, you can explore the small town and spend the night in a local teahouse.

Day 2:

You begin trekking from Khudi and after 6-7 hours, reach Bahundada (1,310 m). Initially, the trek will be easy, but after crossing Nagdi village, it will go uphill. You will stop for the night in a local teahouse at Bahundada.

Day 3:

Resume the trek for about 6-7 hours, the last quarter being a bit tougher than the initial ones. Destination of the day is Chamje (1,430 m).

Day 4:

Continue trekking all the way to to Dharapani (1,860 m), which normally takes 6-7 hours. You will not find it difficult as far as Tal, which divides Lamjung and Manang districts. However, from this point onwards, you will have to put in some efforts as you need to cross several bridges across Marsyangdi river. You will make a stopover at Dharapani, from where you will be able to see the Annapurna Range for the first time in your journey. The village of Dharapani is basically a big settlement of ethnic Gurung people and you will be staying in one of the local teahouses.

Day 5:

Trekking onwards from Dharapani, you pass through Danaque, climb uphill to Thanchok Village and finally arrive at Chame (2750 m), after 6-7 hours. Here you can do a couple of interesting things – spend your free time viewing the Annapurna Range, take a walk through the village or enjoy a refreshing bath in the natural hot spring in the vicinity.

Day 6:

Your next destination is Pisang (3200 m) which lies at a walking distance of ]about 5-6 hours from Chame. You will face some difficulty somewhere in the middle of the day trek, for nearly 1 hour as it involves a considerable uphill climbing. Apart from that, the walk will take you closer than you were before to nature. Under favourable conditions you will arrive at Pisang early in the afternoon, just in time for lunch. Later in the evening, you can do some real sightseeing in and around the village.

Day 7:

Moving on from Pissnag, you walk for about 5 hours to reach Nagwal (3638 m). It is considered to be the best location for viewing the Annapurna Himalayan Range.

Day 8:

Your next stopover, Manang (3500 m) is only about 4-5 hours away from Nagwal and the walk is an easy one. The locals in Manang are referred to in general as Managis and taking a closer look into their lifestyle would definitely be a good idea. Besides, you can visit some very old monasteries in the village of Manang and all the while, you will be able to watch the Himalayas right in front of your eyes.

Day 9:

To prepare yourself for the high altitude trekking to be done in the following days, you need to acclimatise first, and we suggest you do it while in Manang. This does not mean that your day will be spent indoors. You will be taken to a monastery that is situated a few hundred metres higher from your accommodation, where you can meet the resident monks and learn some secrets of Buddhism. Late in the afternoon, you can visit Gungapurna Lake and then see some areas of the village.

Day 10:

Today you will leave from Manag early in the morning and walk for about 5-6 hours. You will first cross Tanki Manag, an old village of Manangis. Then you will take a short tea break at Ghunsang. Afterwards, you walk to Yak Kharka and finally stop at Lether for the night. The highlight of the day will be the view of the majestic Mt. Manaslu (8,156 m).

Day 11:

Considering the increasing altitude, you will take slower walks and head to Thorung Phedi (4,450 m). After having lunch, you will take some rest and if you feel okay to continue, you can walk to the High Camp (4750 m).

Day 12:

Muktinath (3,800) is another important stopover in your trek. Before reaching there, you will ascend to Thorung-La Pass (5,4216 m) and then take a descending path, totaling some 9 hours of walking. A tea break is advisable at Thorung-La Pass, which is also the border of Manang district. Take as many pictures of the alpine region as you wish. Then walk down to Muktinath, one of the most sacred shrines of Hindus.

Day 13:

From Muktinath you will continue to take a descending path and walk to Kagbeni (2,800 m) in about 4-5 hours. After having breakfast, you can explore the Buddhist monasteries as well as Hindu temples in the locality. Under a clear sky you can sight the lovely Mt. Dhaulagari. Before arriving at Kagbeni, you can visit a famous monastery at Jharkot.

Day 14:

Continuing your trek from Kagbeni, you walk for about 5 hours and stopover at Marpha (2,650 m), known as the Apple Capital of Nepal. On your way you will walk past the domestic airport at Jomsom. Nilgiri Mountain will fascinate you for sure. Marpha is the homeground of Thakali people and they are best known for their typical foods and drinks, not to mention their homemade apple brandy.

Day 15:

Leaving Marpha behind, you head to Ghasa (2,007 m) walking for some 6-7 hours and through a few more villages. You will see more of Thakalis in this area as well and you will love the hospitality they offer.

Day 16:

Resume along the descending path from Ghasa to Tatopani (1,189 m), which normally takes about 6 hours. You will enter Myagdi district and be able to witness some of the deep-rooted caste systems in Nepal. Did you ever know that in some places people of the so-called low castes are considered not worthy of being in contact with? In this part of Myagdi, the controversial tradition is still in practice. On your way lies one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Annapurna Region and the deepest valley in the world. To add to your pleasure, spend the evening taking a bath in the natural hot spring at Tatopani.

Day 17:

Today’s walk involves some uphill climbing and takes nearly 9 hours to reach Ghorepani (2,875 m). The walk may seem a bit difficult but does not remain without excitement. Ghara and Sikha are two main villages you pass on your way. The last part of the day’s trek is through a beautiful forest. Ghorepani also happens to be the best place to witness the culture and lifestyle of the indigenous Poon people.

Day 18:

Wake up very early in the morning and without wasting any time, walk to Poon Hill to catch the sunrise that has fascinated everybody. Afterwards, descend to Nayapul (1,050 m), where the trekking concludes. Take a 2 hours’ drive back to Pokhara where you will spend the night in a hotel. Although the itinerary suggests that you return to Kathmandu the next morning, we will be happy to arrange a tourist coach for some later date if you wish to stay longer in Pokhara.
